How to create an inclusive workplace – and why you need one

Want to know how to better understand the needs of your customer base? Having an inclusive workplace might be one of the most important steps to achieving that.

Managing Director of Strategic Shift Consulting Melissa Tandy said an inclusive workplace can lead to a better understanding of the needs and preferences of diverse customer groups, which can create better results for a business.

“Inclusive workplaces actively and intentionally include people who may have traditionally been excluded or marginalised.

“This includes people of different races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, religions, socio-economic backgrounds and ages.

“There are so many benefits gained by fostering an inclusive environment. This positively impacts individuals and can also lead to higher performing teams.

Melissa said inclusive environments can help people feel valued, supported and connected to their workmates. This can improve the wellbeing of staff and an inclusive workforce can also lead to better collaboration.

“The work that Strategic Shift has done has seen improvements in decision-making, productivity and more creative approaches to problem-solving.

“By creating a workplace which encourages diversity, businesses are likely to attract and retain better people, grow their reputation and have stronger customer relationships.

“There are only positives that can come from building more diverse teams and fostering a sense of belonging in the workplace,” she said.

“Strategic Shift works with Boards and business leaders to create long-term, effective plans which incorporate diversity, inclusion, equality and risk management strategies to help organisations grow successfully,” Melissa said.
